The SmurfsThe Smurfs: a story of blue Belgians.
The Smurfs too are Belgians. They live in the woods in the land of the Smurfs (Belgium?). These happy, innocent cartoon figures were created by Peyo and they all have at least one thing in common: they're blue. But they all have a different character and name: you have Papa, Brainy, Jokey, Smurfette and many others. They live in a utopian society and have only one thing to worry about: the wicked sorcerer Gargamel and his cat Azrael. Their original name, given by their creator Peyo (Pierre Culliford), in 1958 was "les Schtroumpfs". They appeared as "special guests" in Peyo's other comic strip creation: Johan and Peewit, but soon these Smurfs became very popular in their own comic strip adventures. Later they even got their TV series. The Smurfs are known by young and old the world over. The comic strip albums and TV series have been translated in dozens of languages. In Dutch they're called "de Smurfen", in French "les Schtroumpfs", in Italian " i Puffi" and in Spanish "los Pitufos". And many languages have adopted a new verb: "to smurf".
