The SaxophoneAdolphe Sax, inventor of the Saxophone.
The saxophone is one of the few instruments that were invented in modern times. The inventor was Belgian Antoine-Joseph “Adolphe” Sax. Sax was born in 1814 in the town of Dinant in the French speaking south of Belgium. His father was a wind instrument maker. Young Adolphe experimented with improvements on existing instruments like the clarinet. In 1840 the saxophone was played before an audience for the first time. The French king Louis Philippe invite Adolphe to France to make instruments for the French military. He became one of the most successful inventors and instrument makers and had a famous workshop in Paris. In 1846 he got a patent for his ”Saxophone”. Adolphe Sax died in 1894. His son continued the business. Twenty years later his son sold the workshop to “Selmer”, who still are famous saxophone makers today. The instrument later was introduced into Jazz music. The sax now has its firm place in Jazz, Rock and Pop music. It is one of the most expressive and popular musical instruments.
