Jacques BrelThe greatest chansonnier ever: Jacques Brel.
One of the greatest “chansonniers” ever was Belgian Jacques Brel. His parents were of Flemish origin. They lived in Brussels and Jacques Brel sang mostly in French. He was destined to work in his father’s cardboard factory, but because of his independent and rebellious character he choose a career as an artist and musician. Jacques Brel wasn’t very successful at first. He had to struggle for years to gain national and international recognition. In 1957 however, success started coming gradually in France and Belgium first. Later he became internationally famous. He performed all over the world and was one of the most popular singers ever in the French language. Many of his poetic and sensitive songs were and still are translated and covered by other artist all over the world. Some of his most successful songs are: Ne me quitte pas, Quand on n’a que l’amour, Le Plat Pays, Amsterdam, Marieke and many others. Jacques Brel spent the last years of his life on Hiva Oa, one of the Marquesas islands. He died in 1978.
