Georges SimenonGeorges Simenon and Maigret.
One of the most important writers in the French language is Belgian George Simenon. He is by far the most read French crime writer. Georges Simenon was born in the city of Liège, where another crime-solver, Hercule Poirot came from. At 16 he wrote for a local newspaper. A couple of years later he went to live in Paris. There he started his professional career as a popular fiction writer. Between 1923 and 1933 he wrote 200 novels. Georges Simenon became very wealthy and lived the life of a rich man. Among his close friends were: Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Miller an Josephine Baker. The most popular of his novels were his Maigret stories. He started to write them in 1929. Maigret is a middleaged police detective. He is as smart as Hercule Poirot, but Maigret is much more human. Georges Simenon wrote his last book in 1973 and the popular writer died in 1989. His Maigret crime novels however remain as popular as ever
