Christmas traditions in Belgium.

There are many Christmas traditions in Belgium.

If you're visiting  Belgium in the month of December, you‘ll see some Christmas  traditions in Belgium. It is a land of folklore and this old Celtic feast is also celebrated there..Most Belgian families find it very important to get together around Christmas or New Year and have dinner with the family. One of the Christmas traditions in Belgium is that most people celebrate this period at home with a home cooked meal.

One of the Christmas traditions in Belgium that have been exported to many other countries the world over is the appearance of Santa Claus. Santa Claus comes from the old Belgian feast of Sint Niklaas . The Catholic Saint Nicholas was known  around the Middle Ages for helping  poor children. So in Belgium Santa and Saint Nicholas show up around Christmas, and both bring sweets and presents to the children.

There are not only Christmas traditions in Belgium. New Year is also very important. It wouldn't be another of the Belgium traditions if there wasn't an abundance of food and drink. At midnight there is champagne and fireworks everywhere. More dates with special feasts are: January 6th, which is the celebration of the Three Wise Men, Easter, Carnival (beginning of spring), not forgetting the many folkloristic and historic celebrations and festivals in every town and city of the country.
