Brussel Sprouts

Brussel sprouts: origin and use.

Brussel sprouts (in Latin: “Brassica oleracea var gemmifera) originate from Belgium,Western Europe. They already were popular there in the sixteenth century. The vegetable soon became spread over the rest of Europe in the following centuries.  Later French settlers introduced the Brussel sprouts in Louisiana. The popular vegetable is probably a mutation of the savoy cabbage.

Brussel sprouts exist in two main varieties: The short one with a height of  2 feet and the tall one with a height of  2 to 4 feet.. Europeans prefer sprouts of  ˝ inch in diameter, while Americans prefer sprouts of 1 to 2 inches. Many of the popular varieties have been in production for a very long time.

Two recipes for Brussel sprouts: recipe 1:Cook  sprouts in  boiling salted water until just tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain in a colander and add butter and salt and pepper to taste.. Recipe 2: Spilt the sprouts. Roll in flour, beaten egg and grated Parmesan cheese. Fry slowly in butter until tender for 15 minutes. You can also use oil instead of butter.
