BelgiumSome aspects of Belgium, Europe.
Belgium is one of the smaller countries of Europe. It is situated between Holland, Luxemburg, Germany and France and has a population of 10 million. The capital is Brussels which is also the capital of the European Union (EU). It is a multilingual country. A majority of the population speaks Flemish , while the rest speaks French and a small minority speaks German. Many Belgians also speak English. The North of the country is called Flanders, the South is called Wallonia. Many international companies and organisations have their headquarters in Belgium. Belgium has always been in the very centre of European history, whether it liked it or not. It has been part of many European empires and kingdoms. It started with the Romans who called the province by the North Sea “Belgica”. Later came the French, the Austrians, the Spaniards and the Dutch. They all left their cultural, architectural and linguistic influences. The country is one big museum with historical buildings, architectural styles, churches, cathedrals, castles and palaces. Belgium is also well known for its cuisine. It equals the French kitchen and some of its products are well known and popular all over the world. Every citizen of the world knows Belgian chocolates, Belgian waffles, Belgian beers and cheeses. By the way, French fries are not French, they’re Belgian too.
