Belgium HistoryA summary of Belgium history.
Belgium was conquered by German tribes, Christianised by the 7 th century and carved up during the Frankish empire in 1100. So you can say Belgium history is rather turbulent. Much of Belgium enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and artistry when it fell under the rule of Burgundy in the 14th century. This was a boom time for the cloth trading Flemish towns and very important in Belgium history. This golden age began to tarnish in the mid 15th century when the Low Countries were inherited by Spain. The following centuries were a time of great religious upheaval, and there were many conflicts between Protestants and Roman Catholics. The next important event in Belgium history is the defeat of Napoleon, which led to te creation in 1814 of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Catholic Belgians didn't like Dutch king William I and they revolted. Belgian independence was declared and on july 21, 1831, now Belgium's Independence Day, Leopold I took the throne. He was a good king and helped the nation prosper. The following kings in Belgium history are: Leopold II, Albert I, who was king during World War I, Leopold III , who was king during World War II, Baudouin, and today the king of Belgium is AlbertII. His wife is queen Paola and they have 3 children, Philippe, Astrid and Laurent. Philippe is the heir to the throne.
