Belgium Flag

The meaning of the Belgium flag.

About two thousand years ago Belgica was one of the northern provinces of the Roman Empire. Belgium wasn’t a real state or country at that time an thus didn’t have a Belgium flag. Most probably it did have a provincial banner though. Later Belgium has always been part of many other European kingdoms. Therefore there never really existed a real Belgium flag.

In medieval times the provinces, counties and towns did have their own flags and symbols. But it wasn’t until independence was gained from Holland that the first real Belgium flag was made in 1830. After a short independence war the Dutch were thrown out of the country and the new state of Belgium was finally created.

The provisional government wanted to have a flag with three colors: the Tricolor. This Belgium flag had to represent three important historic, social and national symbols: black represents the dark soil of the country, yellow (gold) stand for the national wealth and red symbolises the blood of the citizens who fought for independence.
