Belgium Culture

Some aspects of Belgium culture.

Belgium culture starts with the old Celtic tribes that lived where now Belgium is situated. Later came the Romans who again left their culture and language. There is an interesting Celtic museum in Jodoigne and a Gallo-Roman museum in Tongeren. Belgium culture has many more influences from various European 'visitors': the Spaniards, the French, the Austrians, the Dutch and a couple more left their 'footprints' on this smal country. There is no country in the world  where you find so many historic buildings and castles per sq km then here.

When you look at the "Peasant Wedding", the world famous painting of Peter Breughel the Elder of the 16th century, you can see another part of Belgium culture: Belgians love good food and they prefer to enjoy the pleasures of life rather than fight wars. In another famous painting by Belgian painter René Magritte (1898 - 1967), called "Ceci n'est pas une pipe", you can detect the love of the Belgians for the surrealistic side of life: not many things are what the seem to be.

Painting, architecture, music, dance, literature, poetry, theatre, folklore and tradition are all well represented in Belgium  culture. from the earliest Middle Ages upto this day the country has produced many of the greatest artists on this planet. I'm sure you know peolple like: Rubens, Van Eyck, Van Dyck, Breughel, Magritte, Delvaux, Horta, Vandevelde, Jacques Brel, Toots Thielemans, Georges Simenon, Django Reinhart, etc.
