Belgium ChocolateBelgium chocolate anyone?
At the end of the 15th century the Spaniards conquered Mexico and brought a large number of produce back to Europe. One of the things they brought with them was chocolate. Back in those days, Flanders, now a part of Belgium, was one of the most important provinces of the Spanish Kingdom and that’s the reason why the Belgians were introduced to chocolate so early in history. What is now known as Belgium chocolate evolved with the centuries and around the end of the 19th century the first ‘real’ Belgium chocolate was made. Today Belgium chocolate is very popular everywhere. People around the world know it and love it. So it is no surprise that a small country like Belgium is the second largest exporter of chocolate products in the world. Americans, French, Russians, Chinese, Australians or Mexicans: they all love it. Many makes of Belgium chocolate are known internationally: Côte d’Or, Leonidas ; Guylian and Callebaut are some of them. These are well known names, but when you come to Belgium, you should visit a local chocolate maker. You’ll find one in every town and they have a wide variety of excellent chocolates.
