The Belgian

About the Belgian .

The average Belgian is well educated. Six out of ten young people go on to higher education after secondary school. Many speak two, three or more languages. The average Belgian is interested in music and culture but also in travel and sports. One third of young people between 16 and 25 go to a theatre once in a while. One in three buys concert tickets regularly and one in two visits a museum.

“The” Belgian doesn’t really exist. Belgians are individualists and there are 10 million of them. They want to make their own decisions and, if necessary, break a law if they feel it’s an unjust one. They’re not chauvinistic, nor nationalistic or patriotic. Many tend to be real world citizens and are open to foreign peoples and cultures.

This doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate Belgian products or habits. They do consume (and in large quantities) chocolates, beers, cheeses and waffles made in Belgium, or buy clothes designed in Antwerp or Brussels. Belgians like to travel in their own country, but many also go on vacation to European countries like France, Spain or Greece, of further abroad to the USA, Latin America, Asia or Africa.
