Belgian Waffles

Some facts about Belgian waffles.

Belgian waffles are known all over the world and many people like to bake them at home. Waffle irons are not big sized, the standard one makes rectangular waffles of 4 by 6 (or 7) squares. But there are also heart-shaped or circular irons on the market. Before baking Belgian waffles simply grease the iron with some oil or melted butter.

The best Belgian waffles are made with yeast for the dough. Sometimes self-raising flour or baking powder is used, but these waffles are not as tasty. Waffles with yeast can’t be stored for longer than 1 or 2 days. They should be eaten during the baking or as soon as possible afterwards. You can warm them up in the iron you used for the baking.

There are a lot of recipes for Belgian waffles and you can experiment with them as much as you want. Most recipes use melted butter, but it’s important (and that’s not always mentioned) that the butter is not heated too much. You should use the “bain-marie” method. The butter should certainly not boil!
