Origin and characteristics of Belgian recipes.

Belgian recipes are influenced by a lot of cultures because the country has been invaded and ruled by Celts, Romans, Franks, Vikings, Spanish, Austrians and French. All these cultures introduced different cooking techniques an ingredients. Belgian recipes use a lot of spices  such as ginger, cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg an peppercorns.

Another thing you'll find regularly in Belgian recipes is Belgian beer. Additions of spices and sometimes fruit to the beers  create different flavours and make these beers perfect as an ingredient in many recipes. We'll give you one great example.

One of the many Belgian recipes: Brussels sprouts in beer. You need 450 g Brussels sprouts, approximately 480 ml dark beer, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 3 tablespoons butter. Place the sprouts in a medium saucepan and pour in enough beer to cover. Bring sprouts to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Drain well, return to the saucepan and add butter. Stir over a low heat until the butter has melted and coated the sprouts. Enjoy!
