Belgian HorseThe powerful Belgian horse.
The powerful Belgian horse (draft horse) descends from the old medieval horses of Western Europe. The strongest and most popular of these “Great Horses” were found in Flanders (now a part of the country of Belgium, Europe). This Flemish horse (or Belgian horse as it known now) was very much sought by European knights for battles and tournaments. Since those medieval times the Belgian horse has always been exported to other countries to work on farms and later in the industries of Europe and beyond. Countries like Russia, France Italy, Germany and Austria imported the great horses. By the end of the 19th century they were also exported to the USA. In the 20th century they even found they way to Japan where they’re very popular. The Belgian horse is again very popular all over the world. In the USA for example there are more ‘Belgians’ than the other draft breeds put together. It is a big, strong, beautiful and muscular animal with a lot of bone and a strong foot. And it’s not only a willing and steady worker, but also a perfect wagon horse.
