Belgian beerA little history of Belgian beer.
More than 2000 years ago Julius Caesar wrote that the "Belgae" were the bravest under the Gauls. In the Roman empire, beer was the beverage of choice for the common people, but Julius was surprised to see that those Gauls were drinking higher quantities of a more potent version, Belgian beer. Maybe it was this Belgian beer taht made the Belgae so brave... The influence of the Roman culture was so strong that the wine making also made its way up to the north.Today you can still enjoy this wine-making influence in Belgian beer: the aging in winecasks (Petrus Old Brown), spontaneous fermented Lambics (Cherish), refermentation in the bottles (Piraat), and brewing styles of Catholic Abbeys (Augustijn). One of the reasons why the Belgians enjoy the widest selection of different beer-styles in the world is that no law tells a Belgian brewer how to brew his Belgian beer. Other nations may have a large selection of excellent beers, but most of these beers are Pilsner style beers.
